Mookaite is a jasper (radiolarite / siliceous rock) found in Western Australia, named after Mooka Creek, and is known for its rich color banding in red, yellow, cream and purple.
Main deposit: Western Australia (almost the only source), in the Kennedys Range area.
It formed about 120 million years ago in the Cretaceous period from the remains of microscopic organisms (radiolarians) and siliceous sediment.
With a Mohs hardness of about 6-7, it is dense and suited to polishing into spheres, carvings and beads.

2. HISTORY

Mookaite is named after Mooka Creek in Western Australia and has long been used as a stone by local Aboriginal peoples.
