Moss agate is a chalcedony/agate containing green mineral inclusions (such as chlorite, hornblende and goethite) that look like moss or fern in a translucent base, giving it its name.
Main deposits: India (a major source), Brazil, Uruguay, the United States and Indonesia.
Strictly speaking, moss agate contains no real plant matter; the green 'moss' is actually mineral inclusions.
With a Mohs hardness of about 6.5-7, it is dense and suited to polishing into spheres, carvings and beads.
