Septarian (also called septarian nodule, dragon stone or dragon egg) is a nodule that formed on the sea floor, with a dark brown mudstone shell crossed by veins of yellow calcite, white quartz and other minerals, producing a pattern like turtle shell or dragon skin.
Main deposits: Madagascar (famous), the United States (Utah), the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Its formation dates back roughly 50-160 million years (Cretaceous/Jurassic), when sea-floor mud and organic matter trapped volcanic activity and slowly crystallized.
With a Mohs hardness of about 3.5-4 (calcite content), it is suited to polishing into spheres, eggs and carvings.
