1. ORIGIN

Shungite is an ancient carbon-rich mineral made mainly of carbon (including fullerenes), found in the Karelia region of Russia (near the village of Shunga), dating back about 2 billion years.
Main deposits: Russia (Karelia, the world's main source), Kazakhstan, India and Congo.
It is black with a metallic luster and ranges from the bright 'elite / noble' type (nearly 98% carbon) to ordinary black shungite.
With a Mohs hardness of about 3.5-4, it can be polished into spheres and ornaments.

2. HISTORY

Shungite takes its name from the village of Shunga in Karelia, Russia.
Legend holds that Russia's Peter the Great used it to purify water and treat his soldiers, and the local mineral springs have long been considered healing.
In 1992 scientists discovered fullerenes in shungite, making it a material of interest to both science and the healing community.
