Sodalite is a sodium aluminum silicate mineral (in the feldspathoid group), usually deep blue with white or grey veining, similar to lapis lazuli but lacking its golden pyrite flecks.
Main deposits: Brazil, Canada (Ontario, a famous source), Namibia, Greenland, the United States and Afghanistan.
It was discovered in Greenland in 1811 and named for its sodium content.
With a Mohs hardness of about 5.5-6, it is suited to polishing into spheres, carvings and beads.
