Sunstone is a feldspar gemstone (albite/oligoclase) that shows a distinctive metallic sparkle (aventurescence / sunstone effect) from thin plates of hematite or goethite inside.
Main deposits: India, Norway, the United States (Oregon), Canada, Russia, Tanzania and China.
Colors are mostly orange-red, golden-brown and honey-yellow, sometimes with red flashes; Norwegian material is colorless or pale yellow, while Oregon material is noted for red and green.
With a Mohs hardness of about 6-6.5, it is suited to polishing into spheres, carvings and beads.
