Tiger's eye is a quartz-based gemstone whose parallel fibrous structure reflects light to create a distinctive chatoyancy (cat's-eye effect), producing a golden sheen like a tiger's eye.
Main deposits: South Africa (the most famous), Australia, India, Brazil, the United States and Namibia.
Colors are mainly golden-brown and yellow-brown, with varieties such as red tiger's eye and blue tiger's eye (hawk's eye); blue tiger's eye depends on the degree of oxidation of crocidolite fibers.
With a Mohs hardness of about 6.5-7, it is tough and suited to polishing into pyramids, carvings and beads.
